St.Petersburg State Polytechnic University is a Russian National Research Polytechnic University, which is a multidisciplinary for Russian polytechnical education, a leader in multidisciplinary scientific research, a meta-branch of the world class technology and knowledge based on innovation.

 
SPbSPU gained the status "National Research University" in 2010 and Strategic Development Program for 2010–2019 was worked out.

 
Objective of the program is
to update and develop SPbSPU as a new type research university, which integrates multidisciplinary R&D activities and advanced technologies for rising national economic competitiveness.

 

According to the Program in 2010 was founded Joint Science and Technology Institute includes the following Innovative Research Institutions:

  • Researh Institute of Materials and Technologies
  • Researh Institute of Energy, Resources Saving and Environmental Technologies
  • Researh Institute of Nano-biotechnologies
  • Researh Institute of Electronic Systems
  • Researh Institute "Mathematical Modeling and Intelligent Control Systems"
  • Researh Institute of Machine-Building Technologies (MashTeh)

 

 

 

 

 

SPbSPU Mission:

  • Provide prestige, reputation and competitiveness in Russian polytechnical education;
  • Develop the polytechnic system for preparing specialists – surpassing in the training of leaders and the scientific-technical elite, with world class capabilities providing high quality that surpasses the training of other highly qualified and competitive specialists of a new generation;
  • Generation, application and distribution globally valuable multidisciplinary, polytechnic knowledge; development, introduction and application of advanced, knowledge intensive, meta-branch technologies, commercializing the results of scientific innovative activity and transferring technology adequately to real scientific and technical issues in the global economy.

 

The main goal of SPbSPU Development Program is the modernization and development of the Polytechnic University as a university of a new generation, integrating world-class, multidisciplinary scientific research and meta-branch technology with the purpose of increasing the competitiveness of the national economy.

 

The creation and development of a National Research University (SPbSPU) is a fundamental for the successful resolution of real issues in providing specialists and solving complicated, scientific and technical tasks which we are currently facing in essential industries of our national economy.

 

 

 

SPbSPU National Research University will create favourable conditions for:

  • Effective integration of advanced educational and knowledge based technologies;
  • Carrying out theoretical and applied scientific research at an international level.

 

SPbSPU National Research University will effectively:

  • carry out world class, theoretical and applied scientific research in a wide range of disciplines; generating, distributing and applying theoretical and applied knowledge, surpassing development and applying advanced, knowledge intensive meta-branch technologies;
  • develop scientific-innovative activities, commercializing scientific-technical work and transfer knowledge based technologies, meeting the constantly growing requirements of hi-tech industry;
  • create and introduce innovative, educational programs surpassing the competitiveness of graduates at bachelors’ and masters’, possessing specialist interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary skills at an international level.

 

Priority areas for the innovative development of the Polytechnic University as a National Research University in 2010-2019 are:

  • PFD-1. Multidisciplinary Research and Meta-branch knowledge intensive computer technologies;
  • PFD-2. Materials with special properties, nanotechnologies;
  • PFD-3. Energy technology, energy efficiency and environmentally friendly technology;
  • PFD-4. Information and Telecommunication Technologies, intellectual systems.

 

The fundamental goal for developing priority fields at SPbSPU is to increase the competitiveness of high technology industries in the national economy, especially those such as machine building industry, fuel and energy, defence, and also transport, communication, construction and others.

 

 

 

PFD-1. Multidisciplinary research and meta-branch knowledge intensive computer technology

 

The University’s activities for PFD-1 are aimed at surpassing the training of competitive specialists, carrying out multidisciplinary scientific research, development, commercialization and transfer of meta-branch technologies at an international level with the goal of increasing the competitiveness of the following sectors of the domestic economy:power mechanical engineering, nuclear energy industry, aviation and aero-space industry, shipbuilding, and also metallurgy, chemical and oil mechanical engineering, special automobile mechanical engineering and multidisciplinary instrumentation, fuel and energy industry and defence industry on the basis of integrating the following scientific specialties:

  • Mathematics, mechanics, physics, chemistry, material science and biology;
  • Deformable solid mechanics, computational mechanics and computer engineering, experimental mechanics, structural micromechanics and defect theory, fluid and gas mechanics, computational hydrodynamics, etc.;
  • Solid state physics, nuclear physics, condensed state physics, physics of nanotechnological processes, etc.;

 

And also scientific-innovative activities in the fields of development, application and introduction of CAD/CAM/CAE/PDM/PLM technologies at an international level, etc.

 

One of the main tasks which are being resolved as part of PFD-1 is strengthening the leadership of SPbSPU in the fields of multidisciplinary research and meta-branch technologies at an international level in Russia.

 

 

PFD-2. Materials with special properties, nanotechnology

 

The University’s activities for PFD-2 are aimed at surpassing the training of competitive specialists, carrying out multidisciplinary scientific research, development, commercialization, and the transfer of meta technology at an international level for high technology industries in the national economy based on integrating education, science and industry in the following priority fields:

  • Material science, steel and alloys, composite materials, nanomaterials and nanotechnology, powder metallurgy, plasticizing metals, welding and laser technologies etc.;
  • Solid state physics, laser physics, semi-conductor physics, micro and nanoelectronics, chemical technologies, nanobiotechnology and others.

 

The main scientific problems which will be the focus of the National Research University as part of PFD are connected with the development and production of nanometric objects of various geometric forms, nanomaterials and devices made using them, including:

  • Research and development of nanostructured metallic materials with extreme mechanical properties;
  • Research and development of technological processes for acquiring nanoparticles for semi-conductors, metals, insulators and also materials based on them;
  • Research and development of technological processes for acquiring nanomaterials from hydrocarbons and devices based on them;
  • Research and development of technological processes for acquiring extremely thin films for semi-conductors, dielectrics and metallic materials with various functional purposes;
  • Research and development of technological processes for acquiring mono-layer graphene for isolating mountings;
  • Research and development of technology for acquiring hybrid organanic-nonorganic, bio-nonorganic, bio-organic nanostructures, nanomaterials and devices made from them;
  • Development and creation of magnetic nanostructures, nanostructural magnetic materials;
  • Development of methods for supervising the properties of nanostructures, nanomaterials and nanodevices;
  • Research and development of nanostructures and nanomaterials with non-linear optical devices;
  • Development and creation of accompanying nanostructures, nanocompound materials and devices based on them;
  • Design and development of technologies for manufacturing micro and nanosystems technical equipment;
  • Establishment of composite nanostructures and nanomaterials with special magnets, dielectric, optic and other properties and develop on their basis a new class of nanostructured metamaterials;
  • Development of technical equipment for acquiring nanostructures, nanomaterials and nanodevices.

 

 

PFD-3. Energy technology, energy efficiency and environmentally friendly technology

 

The University’s activities for PFD-3 are aimed at surpassing the training of competitive specialists, carrying out multidisciplinary scientific research, development, commercialization, and the transfer of meta technology at an international level for high technology industries in the national economy based on integrating education, science and industry in the following priority fields:

  • Energy technology, electricity, thermal energy, etc.;
  • Energy mechanical engineering, turbine construction, steam turbine and gas turbine installations, chemical and oil mechanical engineering, etc.;
  • Electricity stations, high voltage equipment, electrical engineering and electrical technology, electricity systems and networks, etc.;
  • Physical-technical problems in energy technology, physics of high energy, plasma physics, etc.;
  • Ecological protection, environmentally friendly equipment, technical safety, etc.

 

The main scientific problems which the National Research University will focus on as part of PFD-3 will be associated with the research and development of:

  • Efficient systems for cooling blades in high temperature gas turbines for energy, transport and gas transfer installations, working with hydrocarbon fuel;
  • Technology for ensuring the safety of current nuclear power stations; development of technology to increase safety for existing and planned blocks;
  • Extremely economy multi-mode automatic energy installations with low capacity;
  • Creation of hydro-energy installations, development of technology for wind turbines etc.;
  • Creation of systems for collation, processing and utilization of solid, domestic and industrial waste;
  • Creation of combined cycle plants with various capacities using natural gas, liquid and solid fuel;
  • Creation of devices and systems reducing the environmental impact of energy facilities;
  • Creation of an integrated system for automatic management of energy power supplies and electrical stations;
  • Efficient methods and devices to control the micro-climate in residential and manufacturing locations;
  • Methods and instruments for analyzing the condition and renewing energy equipment on location at pipeline systems without removing soil;
  • Technologies for reducing energy wastage during transportation, distribution and consumption of heat and electricity;
  • Promising technologies for transporting electricity long distance;
  • Methods for integrating small energy systems to Russian energy grid;
  • Systems for monitoring and supervising consumption of energy resources and water.

 

 

PFD-4. Information and Telecommunication Technology, intellectual system

 

The University’s activities for PFD-4 are aimed at surpassing the training of competitive specialists, carrying out multidisciplinary scientific research, development, commercialization, and the transfer of innovative technology at an international level for high technology industries as information communication technology, and also other branches of the national economy industries in the national economy based on integrating education, science and industry in the following priority fields:

  • Information technology, IT and computational technological equipment, information systems and technologies, etc.
  • Applied mathematics, systems analysis, automation, management and IT in technological systems; information-measurement and management systems, intelligent systems, etc.;
  • Mathematics and software engineering of computers, systems and computer networks, computational distribution, grid technology, telecommunications, physics and technical equipment for optical links, communication links with mobile objects etc.

 

The main scientific problems which the National Research University will focus on as part of PFD-4 will be associated with the research and development of:

  • Systems and applied programming for automated systems, information measurement systems and management systems;
  • Technology for supporting life cycle production and software engineering;
  • Technologies for integrating IT systems;
  • Technology for data processing on computers synthesized using network connections in grid-systems;
  • Systems and methods for researching, optimizing and automating parallel computation and data processing, methods for asynchronous computation;
  • Establishing IT systems for different purposes;
  • Technical equipment and systems for highly accurate navigation;
  • Intelligent systems for mobile objects – ground-based, marine surface based, underwater, aerial and cosmic based;
  • Applications based on CALS-technology for managing chain deliveries and logistical production;
  • Technologies for distributing computational equipment, algorithms and software development for applied problems with high complexity;
  • Computational systems for increased computational capacity using non-standard approaches for managing computational processes;
  • Technology for IT security, protecting system communications;
  • Informational, information-measurement and management systems and other promising problems.
